Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority and Ras Al Khaimah Environment and Protection Development Authority Launch Pioneering Air Quality Monitoring Initiative Using Public Transport

In line with the Year of Sustainability, Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA), in collaboration with the Ras Al Khaimah Environment and Protection Development Authority (RAKEPDA), has announced the launch of a pioneering initiative to measure air quality in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. This initiative involves the installation of smart sensors in public buses following the successful completion of the first pilot phase. The goal of this initiative is to enhance the environmental system associated with transportation and the emissions it generates, by measuring the air quality surrounding the buses while they are moving and when they are stationary at stops. This effort will cover a wider geographical area and improve the quality of environmental data.

This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of both RAKTA and RAKEPDA to provide accurate and comprehensive data using buses, which allows for the acquisition of air quality information at various times and locations within the emirate, thereby enhancing the accuracy and reliability of the available data. Additionally, this initiative contributes to the establishment of a vast database that supports analysis and development within the environmental system, helping to formulate informed policies to improve air quality.

In this context, H.E Eng. Esmaeel Hasan Al Blooshi, Director General of RAKTA, stated that this initiative is the first of its kind in the country in the field of transportation. This step is a continuation of the joint efforts between RAKTA and RAKEPDA to enhance the environmental system associated with transportation and emissions, fostering cooperation in making strategic decisions to improve the quality of life in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.

H.E Dr. Saif Mohammed Al Ghais, Director General of RAKEPDA, said: “This pioneering initiative, in partnership with RAKTA, embodies our shared vision towards a sustainable and healthy future for the community, creating a healthy environment for outdoor activities. The authority is working on strategies to reduce air pollution and set strict standards to control emissions. The installation of smart sensors in public buses is a significant step in monitoring air quality. This advanced technology will allow us to collect accurate data on air quality in various areas covered by the buses, contributing to the creation of a comprehensive database that supports our efforts in analyzing the environmental situation and making policies and measures aimed at reducing emissions and improving air quality in the emirate.”
